The much anticipated Charli XCX and Troye Sivan SWEAT Tour has officially started. The Internet’s favorite duo began their joint tour earlier this month in Detroit and will continue through North America until late October promoting each of their latest studio albums––Troye’s 2023 Something to Give Each Other and Charli’s Brat, which was released in June and quickly became the definitive album of the summer.
The pair met at one of Charli’s legendary house parties before eventually collaborating on the iconic “1999.” Since then, the relationship has evolved in tandem with their careers and the pop industry as a whole. In an interview with i-D, Charli touched on this evolution of pop (and being gay icons): “I think it’s a really interesting time in pop music where [being] niche is being rewarded in a way that we haven’t seen for a while. It feels like there’s this new wave of artists with different ambitions and cultural touchpoints who are really thriving in mainstream culture. And I think that’s myself, that’s Troye, that’s Chappell [Roan]. When I think about the three of us, that’s a lot of music that either is inherently a part of queer culture or is very much inspired by it and that’s super cool.”
Troye has described the working relationship as an extension of their friendship, noting that their overlapping communities of songwriters, producers and musicians has made the venture seamless. The tour announcement came before the release of Brat, adding to the album’s hype, and marketing for both the tour and the album were in true Internet It Girl fashion––consisting primarily of viral Tiktok dances (it still overtakes me everytime “Apple” comes on my headphones) and widespread anti-branding memes and artwork. It would be severely underselling these two artists to simply say they have their finger on the pulse. What they have is a veritable chokehold on the cultural zeitgeist.
SWEAT is opened by electro-pop singer/rapper Shygirl. A UK girl like Charli, Shygirl’s set is emblematic of her music, consisting of fast-tempo pop beats, electronic dance music and UK grime. Charli & Troye enter to a recorded track of Charli’s “Club classics,” and the tour’s official setlist is then broken into alternating acts of 2-4 tracks as the pop icons split the stage. The result is a dynamic, high-energy homage to those hot and sweaty nights at the club with your girlies.
The tour’s setlist has remained relatively consistent through the first four shows, with the exception of a switch from Charli’s “Boys” during Act III of opening night to “Spring breakers” at subsequent shows. Other flourishes to the setlist include tour-opener Shygirl joining Charli on-stage for “365 remix” (featuring EASYFUN and Shygirl) and Charli & Troye duets of “Club classics” and “1999.”
In total, Charli’s half of the show includes 13 out of 18 songs from Brat, while Troye’s covers eight of eleven tracks from Something to Give Each Other. Fans also get to see throwbacks like Charli’s “Unlock It” and Icona Pop’s “I Love It” featuring Charli, “Speed Drive” from the “Barbie” soundtrack and a generous helping of songs from Sivan’s previous albums. Yum!
The Internet’s favorite It Girl won’t be stopping with brat summer. After a stellar album rollout full of Internet beef, many remixes with artists like Lorde, A.G. Cook and Robyn and iconic music videos (like “Guess” featuring Billie Eilish and special guest, The Dare), Charli recently announced an entire album of Brat remixes, including “Talk Talk” featuring Sivan, due to release October 11. The superstar will also continue touring post-SWEAT with the Brat 2024 Arena Tour in the UK.
While Brat is Charli’s first album to reach mass hysteria levels of success, the British avant-pop star has been a pioneer of hyperpop since the early 2010s. XCX and SOPHIE, the star’s late friend and groundbreaking electro-pop producer, are credited with starting the genre––trailblazing the sound that is now taking over the music industry a decade later. In other words, the girls that get it, get it.
The party continues tonight at Madison Square Garden. See the full list of remaining tour dates below:
