Eddie Vedder Makes Many Guest Appearances at the Ohana Fest

Earlier this month the hot show was on the East Coast with the Sea.Hear.Now concert where Bruce Springsteen bopped around and made himself familiar.

This weekend on the West Coast the Ohana Festival saw the return of the Eddie Vedder-curated music event at Doheny State Beach in Southern California that he founded in 2016.

Here's a look at some of the memorable moments of Eddie sharing the spotlight with his hand-picked guests.

But first, Pearl Jam played "Whale Song" for the first time ever

The Seattle / Chicago grunge group has a lot on their plate. They don't always have time to play every single song from every single album as they go on tour.

Not only does PJ like to play covers, but they're mighty prolific so there's always new songs in their set. That makes it hard for older tunes that may not ever gotten performed to break through the glass ceiling.

At Friday night's appearance, "Whale Song," from the band's 2003 rarities LP, Lost Dogs, finally made its live debut -- with a twist.

The song, which also appeared on the M.O.M. III: Music for Our Mother Ocean compilation, was written and sung by their then-drummer Jack Irons (who had also kept the beat for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Courtney Love, and Redd Kross).

PJ played two songs off Lost Dogs, the second was the crowd favorite "Yellow Ledbetter"

Jack was not anywhere near the beach festival so his son, Zach, picked up a left-handed guitar and sung his dad's tune along with Vedder.

PJ's Dark Matter Tour takes a month-long break before it heads to New Zealand and Australia in November for a series of shows. Tix available here.

Crowded House makes room for Eddie Vedder

Vedder and the Finns play the Split Enz

When the man who made the festival wants to play a couple of covers with you, you oblige.

That's exactly what happened when the Finn Brothers of Crowded House was joined by the Pearl Jam frontman on two songs they know quite well.

At the end of Crowded House's set, Vedder jumped on stage to do the Hunters & Collectors tune, "Throw Your Arms Around Me."

Crowded House's bassist, Nick Seymour's older brother Mark, is the prolific singer/songwriter of Hunters & Collectors.

Then they played the Split Enz' 1980 classic "I Got You." Fans will remember that just four years after the Enz had that hit they broke up and Crowded House was soon formed.

Cat Power was joined by Eddie as well, for a Dylan cover.

Way back in 2016, a year very important to Vedder because his Chicago Cubs won the World Series that year and he was front and center for many of the playoff and championship games, he kicked off his beachside festival.

Also on the bill was Cat Power, X, Elvis Costello, and Ms. Lana Del Rey, among others. One of the most wholesome photos from that inaugural gig was of Ed, Lana, and Chan (holding some sheet music) in front of the stage.

Opening night this year, Eddie joined Chan during her Saturday set of Dylan covers for "Like a Rolling Stone."

Cat Power has been traveling around doing Dylan's set from his 1966 Royal Albert Hall concert. There's only a few more shows left. Tickets available on her website.

Glen Hansard is joined by Eddie and a little star for "Star Star"

Did Eddie jump on stage with former Frames frontman Glen Hansard to do a song in their set?

Of course. Why not. Also, it's lovely. Before he did it, his daughter Olivia sang "My Father's Daughter" with Hansard (a tune Eddie co-wrote with Glen for Sean Penn's 2021 movie, Flag Day)

But to end the set, first Glen had his group do a wild version of AC/DC's "Hells Bells," which should be standard in festivals going forward. Then he brought up a 6-year-old boy named Bowie who was holding up a sign asking for them to play "Star Star."

It's pretty hard to say no to puppies or six year olds with handwritten signs, so Hansard brought up the lad and they sang the 25 year-old Frames tune together.

And yes, it was beautiful.

"That's how it's done," Hansard said as Bowie got a huge round of applause.

Glen has three more dates on his schedule: The Wiltern, The Fillmore, and The Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. Get your tickets on his website.

Eddie sang Otis Redding with The Black Pumas

It's one of the best songs to whistle to.

So when Black Pumas pulled Eddie out to do the Otis Redding chestnut, "Sittin on the Dock of the Bay," you knew it was going to be a crowd pleaser.

The Pumas returned to the fest after being there in 2021. The band is currently taking a few weeks off to gear up for a three week tour around the world starting the end of October. Get your tickets on their website.

PJ live debuted another song on Sunday night

Pearl Jam got to play two full sets this weekend. One to kick off the fest and one to close it out.

Another song from the Lost Dogs album that had never been played before is "Gremmie Out of Control." When Eddie introduced it to the audience he added that it may never be played again.

They performed it with their producer Brendan O'Brien. Not only is he a multi-instrumentalist, but he's also a killer engineer. Recently he did his first long interview, with Rick Beato, and they talked about many things, including recording The Red Hot Chili Peppers' Blood Sugar Sex Magic.
