King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard Play 3 Shows in 2 Days

For the hyperactively prolific King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, 2024 has become an anomaly in regards to new material.

Last month they released Flight b741 which is their only studio album of the year and if there isn't a followup this quarter it will be one of the few years the Australian genre-benders have dropped just one new record in a year.

2020, 2016, 2012, were the only years they produced just one album. This is startling because since being together a mere dozen years, the masters of experimentation and creativity have produced 26 studio records, 33 live albums, 3 EPs, and 59 singles.

With just one new record to fawn over, it's no surprise that KG&LW have performed every song on the new album multiple times, for the exception of "Hog Calling Contest," which they live debuted September 8, their first of three gigs at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

But because this band has soooo many songs, in the 21 shows they've rocked during their current tour, US/Canada 2024, just three songs have been performed more than eight times: "Antarctica," "Field of Vision" and "Raw Feel."

"Hog Calling Contest" received its live debut on Sunday night, now all of the songs from Flight b741 have been performed live, less than a month after the album dropped.

So yes, the Lizard Wizard will introduce the new babies to their appreciative and open-minded fans, but there's no need to overdo it since there's more than two dozen other albums to dive into.

With that said, songs from the new album have been played 67 times over the 21 gigs, but coming up from behind is PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation (one of the two LPs they released last year) which has had songs from it performed 44 times.

Full show of the September 8 gig at Red Rocks

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard rolled into Morrison, Colorado for what would be their 7th, 8th, and 9th show at Red Rocks. And to add some KGLW fun to it, they played three gigs in two days.

The first night featured the live debut of "Hog Calling Contest" the last song on the new album to have been performed live.

It was followed by the super fun "Elbow," from their first album, a song they had only rocked twice in the last ten years. But as we noted, a lot has happened in that decade of the transformational band being together.

Another special moment came when former Slipknot drummer Jay Weinberg was invited on stage. First the band sang him happy birthday, then he sat behind the drums for two songs including a thunderous version of "Gila Monster."

"SUCH a blast to meet up with King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard as they brought the party to Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre and tore the house down," Weinberg wrote on his Facebook page.

"True highlight to watch wild man [regular KGLW drummer Michael "Cavs" Cavanagh] in action out there on the mic. Love to the Gizz boys & fam for the sweetest invitation and the best birthday ever."

The first song Jay did with the band was "Le Risque" from the new album.

2024 has been a rebound year for Weinberg. In November of last year he was "blindsided," he called it, when Slipknot fired him.

But this summer he got to play in his dad's little group, The E Street Band, as a special guest, and now with the Lizard Wizard. May we all be picked up by such good friends when we've been knocked down.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard is winding down this portion of their tour. They've got a gig tonight in Oregon. The next night they play in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Then they'll do a three-hour marathon set at the Gorge in Washington state.

Then they'll take a month and a half off before returning to stage at The Forum in Los Angeles.

Now you might ask yourself, what's a band to do with six weeks off on the west coast, after only releasing one measly album all year?

Could they have done this intentionally so they could, oh I don't know, record another album for the 2024 holiday season? Could this be the second release this year for their new, in house, record label?

And if that is the plan will that Forum show, followed by gigs in San Diego, Vegas and Arizona see live debuts from that recording?

The best way to find out is to go to their website and buy the tickets for the shows closest to you while they last.
