Sabrina Carpenter kicked off her much anticipated Short N' Sweet Tour in Ohio last night, September 23, to a sold out crowd which was treated to eight live debuts from her chart topping album.
The Short N' Sweet album is currently number one on the album chart for the third consecutive week. Taylor Swift has been the only other person to have gone three straight weeks at #1 this year, when she did it withTortured Poets Society.
One could argue that Sabrina's singles, however, are more of the soundtrack of 2024, especially "Espresso" and "Please Please Please." But I'd never do that, for I fear Swifties.
Regardless, what a perfect time to tour, to spread the word from one of the most popular artists who charmed festivals all spring and summer and has now embarked on her first arena tour.
Other than when she opened for Taylor on a stint on the Eras Tour, Sabrina's past headlining ventures have involved more intimate settings like the Wiltern in Los Angeles or The Warfield in San Francisco. But now your girl is packing them in to basketball arenas named after banks: Barclays, Wells Fargo, TD and Chase.
Last night she filled one named after an insurance company who could have easily guaranteed the 20,000 attendees would have loved the show.
Almost immediately the 25-year-old Carpenter was in lingerie frolicking with her dancers dressed in sleepwear. Suddenly the ultra modern skyrise set made sense. We were at a sexy Breakfast at Tiffany's sleepover.
Did you bring your babydoll and garters?
Sabrina was not shy about doling out her new songs early and often.
Three of the seven tunes in the first of three acts were Short N' Sweet debuts starting with the second number "Good Graces," later came "Lie to Girls," and the act concluded with "Bed Chem."
The choreography and costumes were sexy without being crude, however some parents may have objected if they had accompanied young girls.
Sabrina has a different definition of sweet than some do.
The short part no on can deny, especially if it's applying to her hemline.
Ariana has her high pony, Sabrina has the shortest skirt on the stage.
One surprise that occurred may have been a technical issue, it could have been scripted. You be the judge.
During the end of the Act II closer, "Nonsense," Carpenter usually has some sassy double-entendre in the outro.
In Columbus last night, the stage lowered her into a hole and the mic frizzled as she looked off stage for help or assurance. But there was no cute quip. What the heck?
The sweetest moment was when Sabrina took a moment to let it all sink in that her opening night was sold out and this was all really her life.
The third act contained three live debuts out of the four songs.
While doing "Juno," it became obvious that after "Taste" has run its course, it should be the album's fourth single.
It's the cute, safe, sugary pop Carpenter does so well and will inspire countless TikTok dance routines.
Sabrina ended the show with her #1 single, "Espresso."
After it was all over they ran a video of her telling everyone goodbye, drive safely and "I hope you liked hearing me sing for that long."
Adorable. I mean, sweet.
Sabrina now goes off to Canada then Detroit, then Madison Square Garden and shows all October and half of November, wrapping it up in Los Angeles.
Many of the shows are already sold out so good luck finding tickets on Sabrina's website.
