Miley is back with a new album, new shows, and a first-name-only era and those of us who grew up with her are doing a collective cheer. The Grammy-winning superstar has announced her tenth studio album, Bass Persuades, arriving September 18 via Atlantic Records — just weeks after she began teasing the project with red-heavy visuals and a Wonderland Magazine takeover.
Despite her dropping “Cyrus” from her Instagram bio, everyone knows the name “Miley” when they hear it. She’s a certified superstar with a husky voice and enough history behind her to make any millennial start humming “Party in the USA.” But while she’s owned all her respective eras, this new one feels like something extra special. Let’s talk about Bass Persuades.
“This album is a love story, but love stories are never one-dimensional. They’re always layered,” she told actress Daryl Hannah in a Q&A. “There is definitely a romantic thread weaving through it because, like all my records, it’s a reflection of where I am in my life. But this one feels especially meaningful because this feeling has stayed with me through multiple eras.
”Layered" is right. Miley entered this era with emotion very much at the forefront — from her engagement to Maxx Morando to the self-love and personal evolution she’s written about in recent years. But the album also arrives during a deeply personal moment, following the loss of her godmother, Dolly Parton, whose influence has shaped Miley’s life and career far beyond music.
And if there’s one thing Miley and Dolly’s bond has always made clear, it’s that music is often where your most profound feelings show up. Their connection has spanned generations, genres, and screens, from Hannah Montana to Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party, which the two co-hosted in 2022. So while Bass Persuades was already its own fully realized world, it now arrives with even more emotional connection behind it.
Visually, that world is already looking bold. Miley recently guest-edited a special issue of Wonderland Magazine, photographed by Mario Sorrenti and styled by Alastair McKimm, with Mert Alas creating the universe surrounding the album. Spoiler alert: there’s a lot of red, which is often considered the color of passion. Miley has had plenty of that her entire career, but now, the almost 34-year-old is set to take on the world on a first-name basis.
She’s also bringing Bass Persuades to the stage almost immediately. Miley will perform two nights at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on October 16 and October 18, marking the first live performances for her new chapter.
