Out With: Magic Giant

I arrived at The Shelter in Detroit and promptly messaged Colin, Magic Giant's Tour Manager. He came out to greet me and we discussed the day’s events. Colin was a little confused, thinking I was just there for a photo shoot with the band and didn't know where I'd be able to set up equipment. I told him I was there to capture a day in the life as well as live shots. He sighed with relief. "That's it?" he said. We laughed and then went inside to meet the band and get my credentials for the evening.

Everybody—band and crew—were very welcoming as if we were lifelong friends. Austin, Zambricki and Zang welcomed me with open arms, literally, big hugs all around. We talked about what was on their schedule. They had nothing planned so we explored the venue. The Shelter is the basement of one of Detroit’s incredible venues Saint Andrew’s Hall. As we wandered along, we had mini impromptu photo shoots. Being a local, I knew of a few spots with interesting lighting and furniture as well as an amazing stained glass window.

We then ventured outside, where fans were already in line for the show. The guys chatted with fans, so I captured a few shots during their interactions. Just past the line was an alley full of graffiti, so the guys tried to act like the characters on the wall, which made for fun photos.

Once sound checks have been done and merchandise has been set up, all that’s left is to wait for the show. At this point the guys are checking emails, signing posters and even bought a drum set off of craigslist for the tour. A fan picked up and delivered it to them, since they somehow forgot to bring one along. This isn’t the set their drummer uses, but it was for the guys when they all jam together, so after some modifications the drums were ready. They also had a few guests for a meet & greet in the dressing room. Since I was there, I took cell phone photos for them. As soon as they left, it was time to hit the stage.

The Shelter is a very up close and personal type of venue. The crowd is up against the stage with no barricade between them and the band. So, for live photos, I shot from side stage (both sides) and from within the crowd. The band is very energetic and hard to capture from the crowd, but that made it different than the usual barricade type shoots. I’m very happy with the outcome.

After their set, they packed up their gear and we said our goodbyes. This show was the first of this tour, so as I was saying goodbye, the guys were bummed to find out I wasn’t along for the whole tour. Maybe one day I’ll get to cross touring photographer off my bucket list.

I want to thank Setlist.fm/Live Nation for the opportunity to follow Magic Giant for a day in the life photo story. I also want to thank Magic Giant and crew for allowing me to be a fly on the wall and making me feel I was part of the crew for the night.
