The Killers, Fiona Apple + Others Pay Their Respects To Fats Domino

Last Tuesday, legendary rock ‘n’ roll innovator Fats Domino died of natural causes at the age of 89. Las Vegas dance rock veterans The Killers, who just paid tribute to Tom Petty earlier in the month, continued their tradition of striking a nostalgic chord by doing the same for Domino. During their headlining set at Voodoo Music Festival in New Orleans on Sunday evening, the four-piece act covered one of Domino’s much-loved songs, “Ain’t That a Shame.”

Frontman Brandon Flowers introduced the band’s Domino tribute by chronicling the hometown hero as one of rock’s “founding fathers.” “Some of my favorite memories of my childhood are driving around with my dad. He used to have this ‘49 Buick,” Flowers reflected. “The station was always set to the oldies, and when Fats Domino came on, we always turned it up.” After that, The Killers passionately launched into their cover, backed by The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. The group also backed up The Killers on “Bones,” from 2006’s Sam’s Town. Fats Domino released “Ain’t That Shame” in 1955 and it had reached number one on the Billboard R&B chart.

The Killers aren't the only ones honoring the "Blueberry Hill" singer. The night before they covered Fats Domino in New Orleans, singer Fiona Apple paid her respects to the late singer on the radio show, A Prairie Home Companion with the same cover. Elvis Costello, Dr. John, Trombone Shorty and the Nevilles Band also contributed a touching tribute to the late "Blue Monday" performer at the fourth annual Austin City Limits Hall of Fame Inductions & Celebration on Wednesday at the Moody Theater. While on tour in Europe, Gov’t Mule played “Ain’t That A Shame,” for the first time ever as an encore at their Thursday night with a show at the O2 Ritz in Manchester, England.

Last month, The Killers released their fifth studio album, Wonderful Wonderful. They'll be kicking off the European leg of their upcoming tour on November 6 at Birmingham, United Kingdom at the Genting Arena. On January 5, The Killers will begin their North American tour supporting their number one in Toronto at Air Canada Centre. Brandon Flowers and company will play Los Angeles on February 1 at the Staples Center.
