A Look Inside Steely Dan's Fall 2018 Tour

Fresh off a busy summer of touring with The Doobie Brothers, legendary rock group Steely Dan has just embarked on their Fall 2018 tour.
The band, led by frontman Donald Fagen, is officially hitting up five cities before returning to New York City's Beacon Theatre for a nine-show residency. Steely Dan kicked off this string of shows on October 1st in Richmond, Virginia. The group has also made its way through Louisville, Fort Wayne, Toledo, Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Baltimore.
This tour comes a year after co-founder Walter Becker passed away due to esophageal cancer. Fagen has made several gestures to commemorate his longtime friend, even going as far as placing a microphone stand in the spot where Becker would usually stand.
"It's weird for me to be up here without my brother, my partner, Mr. Walter Becker," the 70-year-old said at a show in Charlotte, North Caroline over the summer. "We're just gonna keep on keepin' on."
And that they have. Joined by a group of backup singers called the Dannettes and a longtime quartet of background players– Jim Beard (keys), Freddie Washington (bass), Jon Herrington (guitar), and Keith Carlock (drums)– Steely Dan has proved they still know how to rock even 45 years after the band's initial inception.
Though this leg of the tour is still fresh, there are still plenty of highlights already to reminisce on.
Oct. 1: Altria Theater – Richmond, Virginia
Sticking with a similar set played throughout the summer, Steely Dan's opening night in Richmond consisted of a 15-song mixture of classic and deep cuts alike.

Here's a clip of the band playing the encore, "Reelin' in the Years" with Fagan pounding on the keyboard in typical Ray Charles fashion with his dark shades and jerking head movements.

Oct. 4: The Embassy Theater – Fort Wayne, Indiana
Again, keeping the setlist relatively the same, the band jammed out to classics like 1993's "Bodhisattva," 1980's "Hey Nineteen" and songs ranging from their earliest works to 2003's Everything Must Go.
They added a cover of The Crusaders' "Keep That Same Old Feeling" to the set for this show.

Though most of the songs on 1977's Aja are more of a fusion of jazz and rock, this next song (and performance) is a perfect example of classic rock n' roll.
Check the band playing the raw flame and live wired smash hit, "Josie."

Oct. 6: Stranahan Theater – Toledo, Ohio
Steely Dan wowed again with high energy and colorful lights. Take a peek at a clip of "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" from 1974's Pretzel Logic:

Here's a rendition of 1973's "My Old School," which is actually based on a true story.

The song was inspired by a pot bust from Fagen and Becker's days at Bard College. Fagen ruefully sings,
“California tumbles into the sea...That’ll be the day I go back to Annandale."
Ah, Steely Dan... taking petty to new levels since 1972.
The band has just two shows left before starting the residency at the Beacon Theatre, where they'll be playing a collection of albums in full.
