Ty Segall Kicks-Off Solo Acoustic Tour + Released a New Album

A festival performance, an art opening, a new limited-release album, and a solo tour. This isn't simply a list of a musician's accomplishments throughout 2018. Nope. This is everything garage-rocker Ty Segall has gone out and done in one, dang week! And there's more where that came from. So let's take a moment to digest all this.

Last week, Ty Segall and White Fence ended their tour in support of their second collaborative album, Joy, with a festival appearance at Desert Daze 2018. On the heels of wrapping that tour up, Segall returned to his hometown of Los Angeles to an art opening of his work (yes, the man is an artist too) titled "Orange Rainbows."

During the reception, Segall surprised attendees by handing out 55 copies a new tape / album titled Orange Rainbows, which features a listing of 13-tracks. It was sold for $25 and released via his Drag City imprint label - God? Records. This marks Segall's fifth album that he released in 2018 if you consider the material he released with his many, different projects.

This includes a forthcoming release of a covers album, entitled Fudge Sandwich, which include covers of: Grateful Dead, Neil Young, John Lennon, and more. In this album, you can expect to find stripped-back renditions of original numbers. The album will be released on Friday (October 26).

“Deconstructing a song is always a good practice when writing your own music because you get inside what a song means,” he said. “Keeps my mind fresh in the sense of let’s not do a 4/4 beat or a traditional drum pattern.”

Segall released Freedom's Goblin earlier this year, a solo album of original songs. He brought many of these cuts with him on his solo-acoustic kickoff show on October 17th in Los Angeles at the Highland Park Ebell Club. These string of acoustic shows are a new challenge for the prolific musician.

“For a songwriter to be able to just perform with just an acoustic and their voice, it’s a very important almost test. I like putting myself through that test every once in a while.”

During the set, he also played stripped-back cuts off of Sleeper, Goodbye Bread, Emotional Mugger, and Sentimental Mugger. Check out the setlist below.

Over the weekend, the rocker traveled up north, playing in cities that make for ideal acoustic-show settings - Big Sur followed by San Francisco. Tonight, he will bring the show to Santa Cruz.
