Epica Kickoff 2019 Design Your Universe Tour With Deep Cuts

It’s hard to imagine a sound as unique as Epica's. Since their formation in 2002, the Dutch metal band has managed to perfectly blend a variety of traverse sounds that would typically serve in opposition to one another. Yet, somehow Epica have transcended the norm to find their way to a sweet spot combining influences from death, thrash and folk metal with a symphonic backing, and man have they succeeded.
With seven full-length studio albums, two EPs and numerous live and compilation albums under their belt, Epica have proven that they’ve found the right formula. Although they’ve been together for nearly twenty years, their current celebration is recognizing the ten year anniversary of their 2009 hit album Design Your Universe. Coinciding with a re-release of the album called Design Your Universe (Gold Edition), Epica set out on an anniversary tour on October 4.

Epica Tweet About Design Your Universe Tour
Deemed the Design Your Universe 10th Anniversary Shows, the celebratory tour is set to run through the beginning of November hitting cities throughout Europe, Mexico and South America before heading to Montreal, New York City and Los Angeles in January 2020.
So far, these shows have been authentically Epica, while also throwing in a few surprises along the way, and it was no different at the kickoff in Oberhausen, Germany.
Featuring a multi-tiered stage with rotating symbol backdrops and single pole lighting features, Epica are bringing out all the stops for this anniversary tour. However, with any album celebration, it is the setlist that truly distinguishes this run from other tours.
As expected, Epica pulled mainly from Design Your Universe on night one of the tour. In fact, while not necessarily in order, the metal rockers played nearly every song off of the entire album. From the hits like “Unleashed,” “Martyr of the Free World,” “Kingdom of Heaven,” “The Price of Freedom,” “Deconstruct/Semblance of Liberty” and “Design Your Universe” to deeper cuts that haven’t been played in five to ten years such as “Resign to Surrender,” “Our Destiny,” “Burn to Cider” and “Tides of Time,” Epica were sure to harp on the Design Your Universe celebration.

Of course, while this is an anniversary tour, the band added a few other hits to the setlist as well including the live debut of the 2014 release “In All Conscience.” In addition, Epica performed their most-played song live “Cry for the Moon” along with their 2005 hit “Quietus.”

Following a brief goodbye, Epica returned to the stage to perform a three-song encore featuring a few more of their top-performed songs including “Sancta Terra,” “Beyond the Matrix” and “Consign to Oblivion.” Waving the German flag alongside their own band’s emblem, Epica ended off the show just as loud as they started.
