Eminem Live Debuts "Godzilla" at F1 (Sorta)

Eminem is known for many things: intense, often inflammatory lyrics; cutting humor; and the ability to rock the mic with lightning speed as he displayed in "Rap God" in 2013.

In that song, Em paid homage to the all-female LA rap outfit, J.J. Fad, of the 1980s by taking their hit "Supersonic" and doing it one faster.

When critics said it was a novelty that he couldn't possibly replicate live, the Detroit phenom live debuted it on the European MTV Music Awards the year it dropped and has proceeded to perform it 45 times since.

The most recent being Saturday (10/19) at the United States Grand Prix 2024 - F1 Race down in the heart of Texas.

But it was the song that lead into "Rap God," that raised eyebrows the other night in Austin in front of the racing fans, the even faster "Godzilla" which came out in 2020 but hadn't been rocked by Mr. Mathers.

You may remember last week on Eminem's birthday some smartass wrote:

"The video has 664 million views, it has over a billion streams via Spotify, but don't expect to hear it live if Em ever gets out of his basement: he's never performed the tune live.Where's that rich guy who likes to pay Eminem for things he doesn't want to do? Maybe he works for F1?"

Longest set Eminem has performed in years.

Well guess what Slim Shady did a few years after he clearly read that post on Setlist.fm?

He not only performed "Godzilla," but he spit 31 tunes. It was the most songs he'd rocked live on stage since March 2019 when he was in New Zealand for the Rapture 2019 Tour.

One minute man? Is that all Austin gets?

"Godzilla" is a perfectly fine song; a bittersweet one because it features Juice WRLD who tragically died a month before the tune was released. In the video and in the performance Em gives a shout out to the 21-year-old Chicago rapper who had an accidental overdose.

But here's the problem. No one cares about that song's first two verses because of the firehose of record-breaking lyrics that appear in the third. The Guinness Book awarded Eminem a record because in that verse he rifles off 224 words in just 31 seconds.

There was no third verse in Austin. Those people were robbed of those 224 words which is what makes "Godzilla" "GAWDZILLA!"

Eminem is capable of rapping at supersonic speeds, despite the fact that this year he will become a grandpa.

Can Em still floor it when he needs to? Of course.

In what was basically his first full set in years, the 52-year-old blazed through "Rap God," which comes in at 1,560 words in just over 6 minutes. The JJ Fad portion is 99 words in 16.45 seconds which is an average of 6.1 words per second.

So yes he's still got it. It just seems like he doesn't want to go for it on "Godzilla."

Guess who's back? Eminem performs his current single :Houdini"

Is it because he's still freaked out over Juice WRLD? Is he honoring his memory by not performing the tune in it's entirety? Is it really just that hard to do?

Could he do it if he slowed the beat down a smidge? Or would YouTubers rat him out and ridicule him for at least trying to get the song out? Despite having a tune called "Just Don't Give a Fuck," he does. We all do.

Eminem emerges from his coffin to kick off his set.

And maybe the guy who opened the show in a Jason Voorhees mask from the film Friday The 13th (1980) while breaking out of a coffin, is more sensitive than his image suggests.

In fact, when the 100,000 spectators at the F1 joined Skylar Grey into a sweet serenade of the most covered song in history, the bearded Libra sarcastically said, "this isn't embarrassing at all."

Before Skylar embarrassed the birthday boy, she had joined him on a number of songs beginning with "Stan" and "Love The Way You Lie" through "The Monster."

She also was there when Em rocked a complete live debut of the tender and beautiful "Temporary" from his latest record, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce).

Mathers dedicated the song to his daughter, Hailey, who was in the audience, as it is a tune he wrote for her.

See, he is in touch with his emotions. So if he does slow down "Godzilla" so he can blow minds live, just let him for goodness sake.

The question is, will he do it live in December when he returns to the stage in the Middle East. His first stop is the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2024 on December 7. Then he goes to Bahrain a few days later to perform at the BEYON Al Dana Amphitheatre.

Then the Oscar-winning rapper is headlining MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2024 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The name is a play on the region's nickname "the middle beast." It's an enormous three-day festival with 8 stages. Last year when Metallica headlined, it attracted 700,000 fans over the long weekend.

Tickets start at just $52 and can be attained on the MDLBeast website.
