Setlist History: Smashing Pumpkins Dress as The Beatles

Billy Corgan has always had the eye of an Art Director.

It was on full display at Dodger Stadium Halloween night in 1998 at the kick off of the Kiss Psycho Circus World Tour as he and the other members of the Smashing Pumpkins dressed up as The Beatles circa 1964 with the black suits and ties.

They also had "The Beatles" written on the bass drum of their percussionist at the time, Kenny Aronoff. Ironically it would be his last gig with the band as they would reunite with original drummer Jimmy Chamberlain the following Spring.

Going with the Fab Four theme, Billy, D'arcy, James and Kenny started the show off with "Money (That's What I Want" the Barrett Strong original. The song was made famous by the Beatles in 1963 in the UK and the following year in the States when they released With the Beatles in the UK which was called The Beatles' Second Album in the U.S.

Ironically, the Lads performed it with Pete Best on the drums at their failed audition for Decca Records in '62, where the label rejected them by predicting, "guitar groups are on the way out."

Not only was Decca dead wrong and had to backtrack after the Beatles changed music history, but they quickly signed The Rolling Stones... after a tip from George Harrison.

As we know guitar groups were not on the way out in the '60s and they were even bigger in the '70s when KISS began their reign of arenas and stadiums.

Halloween 1998 at Dodger Stadium was not just guitar bands proving just how wrong Decca's Dick Rowe was in '62, but KISS kicked it up a notch.

Besides the fire, blood, and pyro the New York quartet had been mastering for decades, for this tour they included all the things they loved about circuses: freaks, acrobats and even motorcycle stunts.

It was all broadcast over the air on free TV via Fox, so the Pumpkins, whose sole appearance on the tour would be that LA night, dressed as the most famous band ever, and an inspiration to both the NY headliners and the support act from Chicago.

Even though they had just released their fourth album, Adore, Billy and the crew live debuted "Cash Car Star" that night which would appear on 2000's Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music.

The closed the hour-long set with an "X.Y.U." medley.

You might say, "wait, 'X.Y.U.' is on Mellon Collie... not Adore. Why does that YouTube video say Adore on it?"

It's true, X.Y.U.' is on Mellon Collie, but Virgin released an enormous box set for Adore in 2014 with over 100 tracks. The last disc of the five in the box set include the Beatles cover and the "X.Y.U. medley" from Dodger Stadium.

They jokingly call that disc Kissed Alive Too as a nod to the classic 1977 KISS album we celebrated just two months ago, KISS Alive II.

Even though the cameras were set up, there's not a lot of video footage of the Pumpkins that has survived the decades, but just look at how cool KISS looked back when they were in their 40s and full of life.

It would have been cool if they had dressed up as the Beatles too.

The Smashing Pumpkins kick off the South American leg of their The World Is A Vampire Tour tomorrow with a pair of dates in Brazil. Then they're off to Argentina, Chile, and wrap it up on 11/16 in Costa Rica.

A pleasant little jaunt of eight gigs. And yes they still have the great Kiki Wong on guitars. And if you're lucky she will be setting out guitar pics for the early birds.

Tickets are available on the Smashing Pumpkins website.
