Set+Reflect: Cub Sport’s Best of 2017

While Australian alt-pop act Cub Sport experienced a memorable 2017 with their album, BATS, debuting at number two on Australia's 100% Independent Album charts, it was the journey of formulating the themes of the record that brought them true enlightenment.

Hailing from Brisbane, Queensland, the band is made up of Tim Nelson on the mic, Dan Puusaari helming the drums, Sam Netterfield playing keys, and Zoe Davis strumming the guitar. BATS, which was released in September, is a follow-up to their 2016 debut LP, This Is Our Vice. The indie four piece come of age on the sophomore record with a surprise revelation of Tim Nelson’s own sexuality. The emotive endeavor touches upon themes of realizing who you were meant to be, and who you were all along. Through intense personal reflections, Cub Sport crafted an inspiring piece of work that boosts groovy beats and tight synth-pop productions. However, it’s songs such as “Chasin,” “Let U Be,” and “Solo III” that display audacious storytelling evoking self-empowerment and resilience.

We recently asked Cub Sport what their favorite shows of 2017 were--both in terms of their own live performance, as well as one they observed. Here’s what the Aussies shared:

“We just wrapped up a co-headline tour with Middle Kids on the east coast of Australia - the vibe of the whole tour was amazing but our favourite show was at Coolangatta. The room was rammed to over capacity and was so full of love! We played our song ‘Come On Mess Me Up’ second-last in the set and the applause/screaming that followed went on for over a minute until I actually asked them to stop ‘cause my mouth was starting to quiver. Such a cool vibe!”

“I’d say it was probably The xx at Splendour In The Grass back in July. I streamed their Coachella set online which was already so beautiful - getting to see it in real life was next level! We're seeing Lorde in a couple of weeks, I have a feeling that one will be up there with my favorite shows of 2017.”
