Tour Update: Lukas Nelson

Lukas Nelson calls his band, Promise of the Real, “cowboy hippie surf rock.” Sure, there’s a mixt of country, hippie rock, and surf rock elements there, but I’d say bluesy-rock would best describe it. Lukas, the son of the iconic sing songwriter Willie Nelson, might share some similarities with his old man, but they're merely on the surface. The six-piece's self-titled record, a follow-up to 2016’s Something Real, communicates confidence with country-soul tunes and components of Southern and Americana rock peppered in between.
Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real - "Find Yourself"
From working with Neil Young on his 2015 album, The Monsanto Years, and collaborating with Lady Gaga, who contributes vocals to “Find Yourself” and “Carolina,” Nelson and company are reaping acclaim from both peers and fans. On Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, Nelson is influenced by formative acts like his father, Young, The Allman Brothers Band, and other '70s southern rock artists, but he’s able to weave his own accounts of beauty and wreckage into a collection of songs sometimes reflecting the 'what ifs' in life.
While out on tour, Nelson dropped by our Los Angeles studios to talk about how he brings his songs to life on stage. Lukas told us, “A lot of the times when I’m writing a song, I’ll imagine myself performing it. I’ll imagine myself in the setting of singing it on stage to an audience. I’ll imagine the ups and downs, the dynamics of a song, I’ll have the whole song sometimes in my head before I put it on paper as a performance that I visualize when writing it. I’ll know when the peaks and the valleys of the song will come in terms of capturing an audience and capturing their attention. I’ll kind of know oh this part is going to be great live, this part is really going to touch people, and it’s going to be a good part of the show to go into this place.” Nelson believes the live performance is the most important part of an artist’s career.
