It’s been an interesting year for one of pop musics biggest superstars, best known for delivering chart-topping, signature hits like “California Girls,” “Teenage Dream” and “Roar,” Katy Perry’s Witness era has performed below expectations, which says a lot for an album that opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.

While Perry may have missed the mark capturing a new peak with the music, she has certainly delivered with her latest outing, Witness: The Tour. As one would expect, there were left sharks, giant flamingos, floating planets and larger than life lips just to name a few of the shows colorful spectacles that revolve around the impressive set of screens shaped into a giant eye.

Perry kicks off her intergalactic odyssey of a show with the title track “Witness,” blasting out to the audience from a shooting star floating above the stage. From here on out, it’s a non-stop party inside of L.A.’s Staples Center, one that only a Katy Perry could craft. Even with a healthy dose of Witness album cuts on the setlist, all the hits were present, some were remixed. “Hot N Cold” borrowed the chord progression from The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven” to give the classic Katy hit a new twist that had me frantically searching the net later which turned up a 2011 mash-up that now sits on repeat. Though I must confess that I rather enjoyed embracing the Witness album tracks on this tour, Katy’s ability to translate even the most forgetful Witness records to an entertaining live spectacle had me counting my lucky stars that I didn’t miss this go-round.

While the energy was high and mighty pretty much the entire show, one of Witness: The Tour’s highlights belongs to Katy’s gorgeous acoustic rendition of her ballad “Thinking Of You,” from her debut release One Of The Boys. Perry made her way across the arena while playing the guitar on a floating planet, all while dawning a shimmering outfit that looked like a disco ball in dress form.

Perry’s latest tour proves that the superstar is more seasoned than ever, pumping through the 24-track setlist like the pro that she is. Between the hits, the fan interactions and the endless supply of some of the most impressive stage props I’ve ever seen in a live show, Katy’s Witness: The Tour serves as a reminder on why Perry continues to remain one of the biggest pop phenomenons of our time.
