Concert Review: Jorja Smith at The Wiltern in Los Angeles

It's been quite the year for English R&B singer-songwriter Jorja Smith. She kicked off the year by making award show history. Smith was the recipient of the Brit Critics' Choice Award, making her the first independent artist to ever win it. She also scored a placement on the Black Panther soundtrack (arguably one of the biggest albums of the year), teaming up with Kendrick Lamar on "I Am." She shined in a BRIT Awards performance with Rag'N'Bone Man, along with an American late-night television debut on "Jimmy Kimmel." She was also part of the Coachella 2018 lineup, with her set being a highlight from the festival.

The 21-year-old singer closed off the first half of the year with the release of her debut album Lost & Found in June 2018, and it was met with universal acclaim from music critics across the board, with some pointing out Smith's immaculate songwriting and powerful vocals. Lost & Found is a compelling body of work that showcases the perfect fusion between classic R&B and pop, every single song takes you into Smith's world, and trust me, it's an amazing world to be in.

This summer was filled with shows for Jorja, who was touring across Europe and Japan with festival runs during both. It all led to the North American leg of the "Lost & Found" tour. Last night, Jorja played one of two sold out shows at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, and it was nothing short of magic.

Jorja Smith is an enigma on stage, she has an undeniable ethereal presence when she sings and it's truly amazing to be able to witness that live. Her vocals were on point, obviously surpassing her vocal performance on the record itself, she really proved to her audience what her vocal capabilities are. In between some of the songs, Smith gave us the backstory behind some of her compositions like "Goodbyes," "Let Me Down" and more. It was nice to see the person behind the song because she is a bit reserved, but in a humble way. Through her vocals, emotions, elegance, and class, Jorja proved that she is a powerhouse R&B performer, and here to stay.

Here are some of my personal highlights from the show:

Smith kicked off the show with the title track "Lost and Found" and was met with fans screaming every single lyric. Fans were screaming every word to each song, and TBH I was pleasantly surprised! The show was definitely off to a good start. It's worth mentioning that every single song off the record was performed, as it should have, because all of the songs are worth exploring and hearing live!

Some other highlights include her hit single "Let Me Down," usually accompanied by UK rapper Stormzy, Smith went solo this time, adding another self-penned verse which is equally as heart-wrenching as the rest of the song. I was personally looking forward to this song the most, there's just something in Jorja's voice that brings out the emotion in me whenever I listen to "Let Me Down," so seeing it live was beautiful. See and hear for yourself:

"Don't Watch Me Cry" was definitely the tear jerker of the night, Jorja herself was even holding back tears, and I won't lie, so was I. It's one of the most raw and emotionally charged songs on the record, and as a songwriter, one of the hardest things is to show your vulnerability while singing your words live and it was truly a beautiful moment to witness:

JMoney concluded her set with Preditah assisted single "On My Mind," and after a rollercoaster of many emotions, she got the whole theater vibin' and ended the show on a positive, uplifting note. She invited all of us to dance and sing with her during her final song and thanked her fans for their unwavering love and support throughout the years. It was definitely cool to see a 2,000 capacity theater dancing, check it out:

If last night was any indication of what Jorja Smith is capable of, I have no doubt she will be playing arenas very, very soon.
