Ohio-based musical duo, twenty one pilots, continue to impress with their ability to genre-bend all different types of music to attract a diverse fanbase.Their songs contain elements of hip hop, rock, electro pop, emo rap and sometimes reggae.
Their latest album, Trench, is the duo's first release in over three years– following 2015's Blurryface– and explores all different elements of music ranging from rap to jazz.
Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun are currently touring in support of the album, and although we're loving all of the new material, we have a list of some oldies that we'd love the band to bring back to the stage.
Track: "Kitchen Sink"
Last time played: November 6, 2014
It's been almost four years since Joseph and Dun have played this gem from 2011's Regional At Best. Joseph's brother, Zack, sings the second verse. It's not his only singing debut; he can also be heard on "Laneboy" off of 2015's Blurryface.
Joseph wrote this song during a dark time in his life. On a Reddit AMA, he explained the significance of "Kitchen Sink."
"For me, something important in my life happened to me at a kitchen sink," he said.
"And in my darkest hour, when deciding whether or not to continue or not, I realized that if I don't continue, no one will be around to explain what that lyric means. So it... helps me. So creating something whether it's a journal, or a piece of artwork, something that you don't reveal the meaning of, can help you know that if you leave, no one will be around to explain this. So in short, I'm not going to tell you what that kitchen sink means to me because I need it to be only known by me."
Track: "The Run and Go"
Last time played: June 16, 2017
"The Run and Go" is featured on 2012'sVessel and also on the 2013 EP, Holding On To You. A major theme throughout the song is Tyler feeling like a burden to an individual. He sings,
"Don't wanna call you in the nighttime/ Don't wanna give you all my pieces/ Don't wanna hand you all my trouble/ Don't wanna give you all my demons."
Following the release of Vessel, Spotify shared exclusive commentary from the group about each individual track. For this song, Joseph said he envisioned playing this song at big music festivals.
"I don’t know if you’ve picked up on it, but I have a pretty crazy imagination and my dreams are pretty big, but this is one of those songs where I picture myself playing in the middle of the day—‘cause we’re not that big yet, we’re not playing night time slots at festivals, but that’s okay, we can still be awesome during the day, you know. But The Run and Go is one of those songs that I hope to play during the day at a festival."
Track: "Ode to Sleep"
Last time played: June 25, 2017
Often referred to as their "Jesus of Suburbia," this track bounces back between two perspectives, the light and the dark.
The verses are dark tone full of conflict, with lines like:
"Then I feel my soul start leaving/ Like an old man's hair receding/ I'm pleading, 'Please, oh please!' on my knees/ Repeatedly asking why it's gotta be like this/ Is this living free?"
But then the pre-chorus and chorus juxtapose those negative ideas with lighter imagery.
"I'll stay awake cause the dark's not taking prisoners tonight/ Why am I not scared in the morning?/ I don't hear those voices calling/ I must have kicked them out, I must have kicked them out."
Track: "Addict With a Pen"
Last time played: April 8, 2017
This fan favorite often evokes a LOT of emotions during a live show. If you're in need of a good cry, hope that twenty one pilots break out this song at a show.
Off of their 2009 self-titled album, this song represents Joseph's battle with suicide as he begs for redemption and forgiveness.
"I haven't found a drop of life," he laments. "I haven't found a drop of you/ I haven't found a drop/ I haven't found a drop of water."
Here's a clip of the duo performing this song in 2012.
