Daniel Johnston Played Final Show w/ 19-Song Set This Day in 2017

We've been without America's favorite outsider in the indie-music scene, Daniel Johnston, for a year now. The Texan musician and artist passed away in September 2019 from a heart attack, but Johnston suffered most of his life from bipolar disorder.

Johnston played music 'til the very end, with his final concert occurring on this day, November 11th, in 2017. It took place in Seattle's Moore Theatre with a generous 19-song setlist.

The night opened up with a showing of Johnston's documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston, which highlights the visionary's struggles with mental illness.

He took the stage after the film with his friends, aka band members of Built to Spill. They took hold of the crowd with opening song "Walking the Cow." The set featured a little of everything from his extensive catalog, including a handful of material off Fear Yourself and Is And Always Was.

Fans got treated to songs off 11 of his 18 albums, with the earliest work being the hauntingly beautiful "True Love Will Find You in The End" as the set closer and the final song Johnston would ever perform live. This was Johnston's most performed song during his career.

Johnston's influence on the indie-rock world continues to soar. Most recently, Le Volume Columbe with Terry Hall and Noel Gallagher covered his song "Mind Contorted," and Warpaint's jennylee covered "Some Things Last a Long Time."
