Spiritualized Played 19-Song Set on His Birthday in Austin 2003

Jason Pierce turns 55-years-old today, November 19. The musical mastermind got his start co-fronting legendary psych-rock band Spacemen 3, before starting up his own space rock band under the name Spiritualized.

In honor of his birthday, we're revisiting 2003, when Spiritualized performed a set on his very own birthday at The Mercury in Austin, Texas.

On November 19, 2003, Spiritualized had just released his fifth studio album Amazing Grace. 9 out of 19 of the songs on the setlist were off that album, but he started off the set with "All of My Tears" off of Pure Phase.

Some of the songs he performed in the set off of Amazing Grace included "Chapter," "Hold On," and "Lay It Down Slow." Songs off Lazer Guided Melodies and Ladies and Gentlemen also made appearances throughout the set like "Shine a Light" and "Cop Shoot Cop."

A Spacemen 3 cover also snuck into the set earlier on with a performance of "Walking With Jesus." Spiritualized has covered this song nearly 200 times to date, the most recent just back in 2019.

The set ender and grand finale was on "Smiles," which is noted to have included a lengthy and improvised space jam. Check out the full setlist below:
