Breakout Artists of 2023

2023 has been a ridiculously prolific year for the industry, with artists like Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, and more breaking countless streaming and touring records. On top of that, platforms like Tik Tok have given the opportunity to a wide variety of up-and-coming artists to promote their music and have their voices be heard. So, let's take a chance to celebrate four acts that have risen to the top of their respective genres this year and truly made a name for themselves

Maisie Peters

While Maisie Peters started making music back in 2017 with the independently released single "Place We Were Made," the singer has truly come into her own this year. Following her stint as an opener for Ed Sheeran as well as hosting a few solo shows in the United States in 2022, Peters embarked on multiple headlining tours around the world: one in Australia/New Zealand, three in the UK (including the acoustic 'An Evening With The Good Witch' tour), and another in the U.S. In addition, her second studio album The Good Witch saw major success with its release, resulting Peters becoming the youngest solo British artist since Ella Henderson in 2014 to rank number one on the UK Charts. Due to her numerous achievements, Peters was even awarded the Rolling Stone UK Breakthrough Award.

KennyHoopla

Ohio-born KennyHoopla has been making waves in the pop punk scene for the past several years, with songs like "How Will I Rest in Peace if I'm Buried by a Highway" and "Estella" receiving critical acclaim among fans in the genre. However, 2023 brought forth a brand new wave of popularity for the artist, as he was invited to join Blink-182 as an opener for their North American tour. Not only that, but KennyHoopla would also team up with drummer Travis Barker to release a brand new EP, Blink and You'll Miss It, featuring the hit song "Sabotage."

For those who many be disappointed that they missed out on seeing him live this year, there is no need to worry - it was announced earlier this month that KennyHoopla will accompany Thirty Seconds to Mars for their upcoming 2024 World Tour!

Tate McRae

Tate McRae originally became famous for her incredible dancing abilities after becoming a finalist on the reality show So You Think You Can Dance at age thirteen. After that, she ended up deciding to focus on another creative passion: music. It seems that success follows Tate McRae no matter where she goes, as the first song she ever wrote and posted online in 2017, "One Day," would receive more than 39 million views on YouTube. She eventually decided to sign with RCA, and has been putting out numerous hits like "You Broke Me First." However, McRae finally went completely and utterly viral worldwide with the release of "Greedy" in 2023. This song would mark her very first top 10 placement on the Global Spotify Charts, even reaching number one in Norway and Denmark. The music video currently sits at more than 41 million views.

Ice Spice

Now how could you have a list of breakout artists in 2023 without including Ice Spice? Dubbed by The New York Times and Billboard as "rap's new princess," Ice Spice has quickly become one of the most popular artists in the entire industry. In the past year alone, the rapper released her debut EP, Like...?, collaborated with Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift, appeared on the "Barbie" movie soundtrack, and opened for Doja Cat's tour. She also holds the title of artist with the most Hot 100 top-five singles in 2023. In addition, Ice Spice has earned countless accolades, including winning Best New Artist at the VMAs, being named Rookie of the Year among Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players, and getting nominated for four Grammy Awards.
