Coldplay Kicks Off Aussie Tour with the Real Karate Kid

Coldplay pulled off quite a residency Down Under earlier this month. Kicking off on Halloween Eve and wrapping up Sunday night (11/3), Coldplay sold out four nights at the Marvel Stadium in Melbourne.

The spacious Marvel seats well over 50,000 people for concerts as it was originally designed to host Australian Rules Football games on a field that is larger than U.S. football.

Coldplay had little problem selling it out as their Music of the Spheres Tour rolls on.

A whopping 227,000 people saw Coldplay during their four-night run of the Marvel.

The Brits now join P!nk and Ed Sheeran as the only artists to have sold out four nights at the venue. Groups like The Weeknd, Harry Styles and the Red Hot Chili Peppers only did two nights there not long ago.

That many devoted fans in such a large venue can create beautiful images like this one of the crowd holding up their phones during "A Sky Full of Stars."

Night two (10/31) fans got to watch '80s heartthrob Ralph Macchio who starred as The Karate Kid sing "Karate Kid" with singer Chris Martin and the band.

It was only the second time they'd performed the new song live and made sure to film it for a forthcoming music video.

Only the final night got to see Martin fall through a trap door before "Everglow."

“That’s, uh, not planned,” Martin said, startled as he was walking backwards when he found himself in the hole. Thankfully he was caught by someone who was in there.

“Thank you guys. Holy s—.” he said, appearing unscathed.

You might remember Olivia Rodrigo fell in a similar trap door when she was at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne last month while wrapping up The Guts Tour.

Afterwards, on the Tonight Show, Olivia said after the show she was taken to the hospital to make sure she didn't have a concussion. Thankfully she didn't have one.

"Watching the video back, it’s pretty terrifying,” Rodrigo told Jimmy Fallon. “I mean, show must go on; that’s showbiz, baby.”

On night two it was "Everglow" that swept a bittersweet emotion throughout the stadium when Chris performed the tune next to a fan named Lidia whose dad had passed away.

Such a lovely way to make such an enormous space seem tiny and tender.

Another fun thing Coldplay has been doing this year is an improvisational moment where he makes up a little song for fans during "The Jumbotron Song."

It started in January of this year at the National Stadium in Singapore and they've done it over 40 times.

Even though the band released a new record last month, Moon Music, and had a record release show and an undersized Brooklyn club, this is the final shows of the Music of the Spheres Tour.

However, a little less than half of the songs from Moon Music have been performed live, which includes "Karate Kid."

Coldplay will tour around Australia through the 16th of November. If there are tickets available they'll be found on the Coldplay website.
