When you play 25 songs a night, on average, it's fun to mix it up a little, Pearl Jam has taught us.
There's two songs Eddie Vedder likes to improvise with on stage, particularly on this Dark Matter World Tour.
"Daughter" from Vs. (1993) and "Better Man" off Vitalogy (1994).
"Daughter" has been performed in 20 of the 32 appearances Pearl Jam have made so far this year.
Near the end of the tune, Eddie will break into a verse from Tom Petty or Devo or PiL or The La's. Sometimes he'll sing the chorus from Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall."
And sometimes he'll incorporate some lines from one of the opening bands on the tour, Pixies, specifically "Monkey Go To Heaven."
Eddie, like all of us, enjoys chewing through the concept of "if the devil is six then God is seven, then God is seven."
Friday night (11/8) during the band's first of two nights at the Go Media Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand, Eddie mixed in both Floyd and the Pixies during "Daughter" and the Kiwis ate it up.
Because Vedder is just borrowing a line or two and not the entire song, it's called a "tag" and not a "cover."
This is not to say Pearl Jam doesn't play covers. Nearly all of their shows they close with the Neil Young classic, "Rockin' in the Free World." Indeed, on Sunday (11/10) a teen with a sign was permitted on stage to help out on guitar.
The Sunday show was where Pearl Jam did a number on "Better Man." This tune is played less frequently - just a dozen times this year - but when they do it Eddie typically adds a few lines from The English Beat's '80s hit, "Save It For Later."
During that second engagement in New Zealand, Vedder not only added that tag, but also worked the Crowded House banger, "Don't Dream It's Over," into the music.
Fun fact (or Finn fact?): Liam Finn, son of Neil Finn from Crowded House is the other opener for this two gigs of the tour.
During Friday's gig, Liam joined Pearl Jam for a fun rendition of "Habit" off No Code.
Then on Sunday, Vedder invited Neil up to play the Crowded House hit, "Throw Your Arms Around Me."
How often do you get to jam with a son and then his dad in back-to-back gigs?
Another Finn fact: Liam has been a member of his dad's band since 2021. He is a core member of Crowded House now. And one of his songs is on the new album which dropped this year.
Pearl Jam now heads to Australia's Gold Coast, Melbourne, and Sydney for the last stops of the tour.
