Pappy & Harriet's Palace: Venue Spotlight

Like many things in Southern California, Pioneertown started as a movie set, except this was in the high desert, about an hour drive from where Coachella is held.

Back in the day, though, it was a place where Roy Rogers and his peers could shoot a Western and then grab a meal without leaving the street.

Out of those humble beginnings came a roadhouse that locals first knew as The Cantina, then as a down-low hideout for bikers, outlaws, and ranch hands.

In 1982, Harriet and Claude “Pappy” Allen put their names on the door and their family recipes on the grill, turning the film prop into a cozy clubhouse where bands and troubadours could plug in and enjoy the quirky Old West vibes of Joshua Tree.

The Allens kept it simple, unassuming, and unpretentious. There was chili served on the table, kids running around the dining room while mom and dad sang honky-tonk chestnuts and if you knew the words, you'd sing along too.

It was hard not to feel at home instantly, as if you were in somebody’s worn-in living room. The Pappy part made sense, and the Palace portion was clearly for laughs.

Sadly, in '94 Pappy moseyed off into the big palace in the sky and the joint changed ownership, but stuck to its roots: honest food and earnest music.

The new owners booked indie rockers, desert punks, and no-nonsense country outfits.

Touring bands who were in no hurry between Los Angeles and Phoenix started requesting to play there. The calendar got weirder and better.

Usually a Beatle appearance would blow up a spot. Not in this case.

Weeknights could get as busy as weekends and one no longer had to trek to a big city to hear and see some of the best musicians anywhere.

Pappy & Harriet's growth mimicked the rise of the modern desert-rock lore, the one that runs from Rancho de la Luna to the Morongo Basin’s homestead cabins.

Rockers including Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal, and their extended families of collaborators drifted through to bask in the realness of both the inside room and the outdoor stage in the back.

Meanwhile folkies who escaped LA for the funkier feel of JTree, like Victoria Williams, became regulars and gave those in the know even more reason to make Pioneertown a destination instead of a detour.

For what it's worth, here's a member of Led Zep at Pappy & Harriet's

In 2003 Pappy & Harriet's stewardship fell into the hands of New Yorkers Robyn Celia and Linda Krantz who for 18 years pulled in a variety of top groups as well as legends like Paul McCartney and Robert Plant who appreciated that although the venue's origins might have been in make believe, it became something more authentic than most.

After surviving through the COVID years, in 2021 ownership changed hands again, this time to Morgan Margolis & Partners, the music curators Knitting Factory Ent. & Bravo presents, their booking arm.

Capacity can be both a blessing and a better blessing. Inside is the intimate room, comfortably holding 244 souls depending on layout and production.

Out back, the yard can scale for bigger names, accommodating 800 to 1,000. Exact numbers vary, and to be frank, are really none of our beeswax. Drink your beer and smile.

Pappy & Harriet's has the magical distinction of helping large acts feel new again, while making new acts feel big.

And best of all, because it's pretty far from cell towers, the phone service sucks, helping the audience stay in the moment and off their screens. Like in olden times.

Fun fact #1: Cracker have played Pappy's the most so far with 28 appearances. The CVB & Cracker Campout has occurred 16 times over 20 years.

Here's a few of the groups that have played there who need no introduction who probably had as much fun performing in the desert as the fans had being there.

The Pretenders

L7

Circle Jerks

The Dream Syndicate

Squeeze

Fun fact #2: When Pappy died, Victoria Williams wrote him the lovable song "Happy to Have Known Pappy" which is part of her beautiful 1994 album, Loose.

Pappy & Harriets has an amazing lineup of shows scheduled for the rest of this year including several nights with Orville Peck, John 5, Los Lobos and may more.
