A Glimpse at Travis Scott's Soaring 2018 in Astroworld

I think many of us are wishing 2018 treated us the same way it treated Travis Scott. The Houston rapper has had one of the biggest years in hip-hop, and his success is anything but slowing down. The release of his third studio album Astroworld was a bonafide smash, giving Scott streaming domination, and evolving him into a hip-hop elite.

Travis is a star, and 2018 has given us even more statistical evidence of that. He has become a master of design and production, his live performance has reached distinguished stature, and he has released one of the most successful albums of 2018. Let's take a look back into the year of Travis Scott.

February - It's A Girl

Travis started his 2018 with the shocking and exciting announcement of the birth of his baby girl with Kylie Jenner.

He was also featured on "Big Shot" off Black Panther The Album, Smokepurrp's "Finger Blue," and Trippie Red's "Dark Knight Dummo."

May - LA FLAME returns

In early May, we got the first La Flame single of 2018. Travis released his collaboration with Kanye West and Lil Uzi Vert which was titled "Watch." It was a banger, as many of us can still hear the chorus ringing in our heads: "Look at your Rollie, uh, look at my Rollie, uh/That's a small face, uh, this a big face, uh."

June - Performances on Performances

On June 2, the rapper took the stage for his Governors Ball Set, being his first headlining performance for the festival (a career feat he proudly shared with everyone in attendance). The set began with amusement park-inspired introduction video (which had little significance at the time) before the stage’s screen was engulfed in flames and Travis transported the audience to his personal rodeo. Check out his setlist from Gov Ball 2018:

Towards the end of June, Travis performed at the second annual NBA Awards in Santa Monica, California. He took the stage with a medley of hits including “Watch,” “Goosebumps” & “Butterfly Effect,” backed by compelling visuals.

July - It's Festival Season

Travis spent his July, like many artists did, hitting the road going festival to festival. He hit the Longitude Festival in Dublin, Ireland, the Benicàssim 2018 festival in Benicàssim, Spain, the Super Bock Super Rock 2018 in Lisbon, Portugal, and lastly Lollapalooza Paris.

On July 30th, Travis officially announced his Astroworld album with its release date (August 3) and a trailer for the album.

August - WHAT A RIDE!!!

On the eve of Astroworld's drop, Travis took the stage for his headlining set at Lollapalooza in Chicago, Illinois. He opened his set with "STARGAZING" and closed with the live debut of "5% Tint," both tracks off the new album.

On August 3rd, Astroworld was open for business, and its visitors were endless, and seemingly still are. Astroworld was undoubtedly a success, and proved impressive new heights for Travis and his artistic capabilities. He recruited the perfect batch of producers and features to make an album that was an instant classic.

Travis Scott didn't just create a album with an amusement park theme; he produced the acoustic version of one. Astroworld became an engulfing experience with an accompanying merch collection and the inaugural Astroworld Festival announce.

About 2 weeks after the album's release, Travis announced The "ASTROWORLD: Wish You Were Here Tour." The tour is currently traveling across all major cities in North America and is bringing along Gunna, "Virgil" Abloh, Tripe Red, and Sheck Wes as supporting acts.

September - Call your friends... and let's get drunk!!!

As the success of Astroworld continued, Travis seemed to put his September efforts into designing and planning for the tour. But some VERY exciting news came when Travis tweeted:

"Maria I’m drunk can finally be stream. It’s been a legit 4years don’t ask me what took so long !!! I’m just happy I can listen to it."

"Maria I'm Drunk" was originally on Travis's debut album Rodeo, but was removed from streaming services for unknown reasons. The track, featuring Justin Bieber and Young Thug, is finally available again, and I can personally say it's been on repeat ever since...
making the line "CALL YOUR FRIENDS AND LET'S GET DRUNK" consistently being sung in my head.

October - No Slowing Down For Travis

On October 6th, Travis Scott was called to be the guest performer of SNL. Travis himself recruited all-star guests John Mayer and Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker for a woozy mash-up of "SKELETONS" and "ASTROTHUNDER." Scott also appeared in a sketch alongside host Awkwafina about a late-night dance off to the Jeopardy! theme song. He closed out the night with a surreal, dark vibe as he performed "SICKO MODE." Check out both performances below:

October was also the month of the legendary "SICKO MODE" music video. The video takes us to Houston, Texas, Scott's hometown and the site of his upcoming Astroworld Festival. The video is a complete thrill including a Don Toliver cameo, plurality of stunning images and sets, and Drake falling through space.

November - Travis Hits the Road

The "ASTROWORLD: Wish You Were Here" Tour finally kicked off on November 8th in Baltimore, Maryland. Check out his setlist from that night:

Travis Scott is impressively talented in putting on a show and this tour has been everything but boring. The Astroworld tour has brought set design and creativity to the next level, even making use of a large-scale rollercoaster on stage.

His Astroworld Festival took place November 17th with over 40K attendees. Lil Wayne, Young Thug, Rae Sremmurd and Post Malone were among the headliners. The fest featured the customary festival rides as well. The website states that the festival will be back next year.

December - Will 2019 be the year Travis finally takes home a Grammy?

2018 has given us no shortage of incredible hip-hop albums, making a tight race for the 2019 Grammy Awards. Travis Scott's Astroworld is on that short list, as well as being nominated for for best rap performance ("Sicko Mode") and best rap song ("Sicko Mode"). Travis responded to his nominations on Twitter:

"Thank u record academy it’s took a whole 24hrs for it to really hit me. Plus this has Also been my duffle all year,"
