Setlist History: Ben Folds Live Debuts Songs off "Way to Normal"

Ben Folds has been a mainstay in the indie music scene for years. His band, Ben Folds Five, which formed in the early 90s and broke up in 2000, was a huge influence on alt-rock bands of the early aughts.

Following the band's break up, Folds went on to pursue his solo career. In 2008, Folds released his third solo album, Way to Normal, his last full-length solo album to date. But prior to that, in 2007 on this very day (December 19), Folds took stage on Exit/In in Nashville and started ambitiously performing one new song after the next.

All six songs he live debuted that night were tracks off the then-forthcoming Way to Normal, which would be released almost a whole year later in September 2008. The album turned out to be his highest-charting album ever in the US, reaching at #11 on the Billboard 200.

The songs he performed off the album were: "Effington," "Brainwascht," "Free Coffee," "Bitch Went Nuts," "You Don't Know Me" and "Errant Dog." The night was a special evening in more than one way. After 10 songs, Folds performed three of his better known (at the time) tracks solo, and then once the band came back to the stage, they went onto perform a handful of Ben Folds Five song.

Watch a clip of him performing "Free Coffee" from that gig:

They ended the set on a Dr. Dre cover of "B*tches Ain't Shit," yeah, imagine an indie rock version of that if you can...

The encore was "One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces" by Ben Folds Five. See the complete setlist below.

Ben Folds

Folds has not released any solo material in over a decade. In 2012 he released a reunion album with Ben Folds Five, and since then has only worked on collaborations. He still is good about doing live solo performances, however. The last being a special Q&A set at Rough Trade Records in New York City, and earlier in the summer he went on a joint headlining tour with fellow alt-rock 90s back CAKE.

He still performs plenty of cuts off Way to Normal, with "You Don't Know Me" being his most performed track off that album to date.
