Children of Bodom Perform Final Show in Finland with 18 Song Set

It is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to Children of Bodom. The death metal legends announced back in November that their Helsinki, Finland show this past week would be their last with the current lineup.

"It is with heavy hearts that we announce that 2019 will be the last for Children Of Bodom with this line-up.
After almost 25 years with Bodom, thousands of shows & 10 albums it is time for Henkka, Janne and Jaska to step back and change direction within their lives. All three will miss the fans and supporters in every city in every country the band ever played." - Children of Bodom

Perhaps the most successful Finnish band of our time, COB has released fourteen studio, live and compilation albums combined and remain at the top of the death metal genre. However, despite their popularity, as specified in the announcement, Henkka Seppala (bass), Janne Wirman (keyboards) and Jaska Raatikainen (drums) have decided to take a step back from the band to pursue their own opportunities.

Fortunately, the long-haired legends were sure to go out with a bang, playing a vast number of shows across Europe and North America on their Hexed Tour since the start of the year. And after eight shows in their native home of Finland this past week, COB officially wrapped the tour and frankly, their career as a band at Icehall in Helsinki.

Deemed “A Chapter Called Children of Bodom,” the one-off show was not technically a part of their Hexed Tour despite its proximity to the rest of the show dates. Instead, they wanted to classify their final show together in a different category. In this same regard, the set itself was quite distinct compared to the Hexed Tour sets as the band was sure to make their final show one to remember.

Performing an eighteen-song setlist, including a four-song encore, Children of Bodom had plenty of room to work with when choosing songs for the night. Staying true to their roots and beyond, COB harped on their entire catalogue, choosing at least one song from all ten full-studio albums to add to the setlist.

That’s right, from Something Wild (1997) to Hexed (2019), the death metal icons made it a point to touch on every moment in their musical history.

Of the songs played, almost all are in their top twenty-played songs live, including their top four featuring “In Your Face,” “Angels Don’t Kill,” “Hate Me!” and “Downfall.”

Furthermore, of every album in their repertoire, COB featured more songs off of Hate Crew Deathroll (2003) and Follow the Reaper (2000), which also happen to be their two most critically acclaimed records. From “Hate Crew Deathroll” and “Needled 24/7” to “Everytime I Die” and “Follow the Reaper,” it’s hard to argue against the setlist choices with such classic hits.

And just like that, Children of Bodom have wrapped on a fantastic career with their current lineup. Despite the melancholy surrounding the current band's state, there is still hope for a new lineup moving forward. EDIT: RIP to Alexi Laiho, who passed away at age 41 in December 2020.
