2022 in Review: Ash Costello of New Years Day

2022 was a renaissance for rock band New Years Day. They released "Hurts Like Hell," their first new song in three years, and got back to playing live after a long layoff due to the pandemic. Regulars on the festival circuit, New Years Day played Louder Than Life and Aftershock in addition to supporting Halestorm on their Back from the Dead tour.

Despite a busy fall and winter, as well as prepping for big things for 2023, lead vocalist Ash Costello took the time to answer our end-of-year questions!

Setlist.fm: What was your favorite show that YOU played this year? Tell us about it.

Ash Costello: Obviously that’s tough because we were fortunate to play with so many incredible bands at so many epic venues, but one that truly stands out in my mind was opening for Disturbed at the Dickies Arena in Texas. It was such a huge crowd for us, and they were all engaged. I’ll remember it for the rest of my life!

Setlist.fm: What was your favorite show that you SAW this year?

AC: I’m glad you asked! I was able to see AFI in March play the Hollywood Palladium. They’re a band from my youth who don’t tour as much now, so to be home and not on tour and NOT miss one of my favorite bands is a rarity!

Setlist.fm: Can you share a favorite touring memory from this year?

AC: The very first moment we walked back on a venue stage as New Years Day; it had been three years prior and the moment was overwhelming. I missed it so so much.

Setlist.fm: What do you have planned for 2023?

AC: I’d like to travel the world this year! We miss our fans in other countries so deeply. But I’m mostly looking forward to the festivals we will be playing! I enjoy playing the large outside venues with tons of bands because it’s always a full day filled with chaos and excitement and fun.
