2022 was a big year for music, with acclaimed albums released by major artists like Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Kendrick Lamar. But it was also a year that saw new artists and even those who have been on the grind for a while break out in a big way. We’re taking a moment to celebrate four acts who made a big splash in 2022 and are poised to keep getting bigger.
Turnstile
The hardcore band actually formed back in 2011, but it was their third album, Glow On, that helped Turnstile really blow up. Glow On debuted at No. 30 on the Billboard album charts and peaked at No. 1 on the U.S. Hard Rock Chart. The album received massive critical acclaim and made many “best of” lists for 2021. However, the following year, the band was able to grow their following with a return to touring. In addition to their fall headlining tour and performing at Glastonbury 2022, Turnstile seems to be the official supporting act of reunion shows. They opened for select dates during My Chemical Romance’s reunion tour and were announced as the support act for the North American leg of Blink-182’s highly anticipated tour that sees guitarist and co-lead vocalist Tom DeLonge return for the first time since 2015.
Turnstile is nominated for three Grammy Awards, which will be held on February 5, 2023. Their song “Holiday” received a nomination for Best Rock Performance, while “Blackout” is nominated for both Best Metal Performance and Best Rock Song.
Wet Leg
With irreverent lyrics, post-punk melodies, and a deadpan delivery, Wet Leg would not have seemed out of place in the new wave scene with bands like The Waitresses. Influences from the indie, garage band moment of the early 2000s is also apparent, yet at the same time the duo hailing from the Isle of Wight sounds incredibly fresh. Having worked on music on their own for years, Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers formed Wet Leg in 2019. Their first two singles were released in 2021, and the cottagecore look juxtaposed with sardonic lyrics (including a Mean Girls reference) made the “Chaise Longue” music video a viral hit. Wet Leg’s self-titled album came out this year and earned the duo accolades as well as celebrity fans. They were featured on Elton John’s Apple Music radio show as well as BBC Radio’s “Everything is Emo,” hosted by Hayley Williams of Paramore.
For this year’s Grammy Awards, Wet Leg was nominated for Best New Artist, Best Alternative Album, and Best Alternative Performance for “Chaise Longue.”
GAYLE
The alphabet has never been so cathartic. In addition to being a huge viral hit on TikTok, GAYLE’s debut single “abcdefu” nominated for Song of the Year at the Grammy Awards. Only 17 when the song was released, GAYLE went on to record different versions (such as “angrier” or “nicer”), which has helped maintain its popularity on TikTok allowing it to be used in different styles of videos.
Don’t let that strategy make you think she’s destined to be a one-hit wonder though. Remember all the remixes of “Old Town Road’? And look at Lil Nas X now! In fact, GAYLE has already released two EPs in the past year alone. A study of the human experience volume one came out in March, and volume two dropped in October. But perhaps the most exciting thing for fans is that GAYLE will be one of the opening acts on select dates for Taylor Swift’s record-breaking Eras tour.
Måneskin
While they were the runners-up on the Italian version of X Factor, Måneskin proved to be the real winners. First, they won Eurovision Song Contest 2021 with “Zitti e buoni,” and then their cover of Frankie Valli’s “Beggin’” was a massive hit on the charts and TikTok. The Italian rockers have had three top 10 singles and are one of the nominees for Best New Artist at the 2023 Grammy Awards.
If that wasn’t enough, their 2022 was full of standout moments. They started out the year as the musical guest on SNL in January, had a song featured on the Elvis soundtrack, and performed on both The Tonight Show and the VMAs, where they won Best Alternative. Måneskin’s third album Rush! is set to be released in January 2023 and will feature “Kool Kids,” which the band debuted at their tour kickoff in Mexico City.
