Year in Review: Red Hot Chili Peppers

What do you give a band who has everything? More! (And a few things they haven't received yet.)

Let's go month by month with the Chili Peppers and see what went on during one of their most successful years.

1/10 Flea, a giant NBA fan, is invited onto the Crypto Arena floor at halftime at a Laker game to compete in a challenge. How did he do? Let's just say Lebron will remain a starter for the "fast-break makers" for now.

Not everyone can perform in arenas under pressure with everyone watching.

1/28 On his Instagram, Flea teases a few seconds of what would later be known as "Black Summer" from their forthcoming album. "We been nurturing the feral animal for quite a while, it’s about time to set her free," he writes.

The first single from Unlimited Love is "Black Summer"

2/3 The band announce their new album, Unlimited Love will be 17-songs and 73-minutes long. The album, produced by Rick Rubin, which will drop on April 1, will be the first offering with guitarist John Frusciante since 2006's Stadium Arcadium. It marks the 12th album for the group.

2/4 Anthony Kiedis tells NME “The biggest event, honestly, was John Frusciante returning to the band. That was the most monumental change in our lives. And God was I down for anything and everything.”

2/9 The Chilis hint that they have way more music up their sleeve they want to release. Could a second album in 2022 be close behind? Spoiler: Yes. "Don’t be surprised if another wheelbarrow of songs comes your way in the near future. We have a lot of shit to turn people onto," Anthony tells NME about the 50 tunes they recorded with Rubin they want to release unto the world.

2/11 Flea puts his spaceship-looking home in La Crescenta up for sale for close to $10 million.

2/22 Drummer Chad Smith straps on a Les Paul and rocks out with Eddie Vedder's sideband, The Earthlings, on a Neil Young cover.

There are no new Angus Youngs. But Chad is fun to watch.

3/4 The band releases their second video from Unlimited Love," the trippy, animated "Poster Child," created by Frenchmen who had never been to LA before.

Long live videos

3/9 Flea joins Nick Cave & Warren Ellis on stage at the Shrine in LA for the The Bad Seeds’ tune "We No Who U R."

3/10 Frusciante explains what led to him leaving the band after the 2006 tour: “I became quite off-balance mentally those last couple of years we toured,” he said. “As the tour went on, I got deep into the occult, which became a way of escaping the mindset of tour life.” Adding, “the occult tends to magnify whatever you are, and I was an imbalanced mess.”

3/30 The band releases the thrilling and funny video for their second single, "These Are The Ways."

Will someone bring back MTV?

3/31 Woody Harrelson, Bob Forrest, and George Clinton help the Peppers reveal its star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. “I’m pretty sure that I have inadvertently vomited on Hollywood Walk of Fame stars in my lifetime," Kiedis told the fans at the unveiling. "I’ve certainly slept on top of Hollywood Boulevard Walk of Fame stars in my lifetime. I’ve trod upon them not as a tourist but as a person running from the authorities or possibly running from somebody that I owed money to.” He later licked the star.

4/1 To celebrate the official launch of the new album, the band performs on the roof of the Jimmy Kimmel show above Hollywood Blvd.

4/1 Then they perform about a mile away at the cozy Henry Fonda Theater and are joined by George Clinton on "Give It Away."

The Chili Peppers have been tight with Clinton, the Parliament Funkadelic musician, since he produced their sophomore album Freaky Styley

4/8 Unlimited Love debuts at #1 in the UK and Australia.

4/10 For just the second time in its long career, the band has an album atop Billboard's 200 in the US.

5/11 Due to unforeseen circumstances, the band drops out of performing on the 2022 Billboard Awards.

5/26 Also due to unforeseen circumstances, Flea pops into the Star Wars universe with a cameo as a Vect bounty hunter in the "Obi-Wan Kenobi" Disney+ series.

6/3 A mother and daughter accidentally bought tickets to see the Red Hot Chili Pipers, who are bagpipers, instead of the LA funk rockers. (They still loved it.)

6/4 The Unlimited Love World Tour kicks off at Estadio Olímpico de la Cartuja in Seville, Spain which holds 60,000 fans. It was the first time Frusciante played with the band on a stage that grande in 15 years. Setlist here.

6/5 The band has so many new songs, they release "Nerve Flip" as a Japanese-only bonus track which features the line, "the onion never stays peeled."

6/22 In Manchester, England, the Chili Peppers have to open for themselves because their opener, ASAP Rocky was tardy.

7/1 The band cancels their Glasgow show due to illness.

7/9 Hey Brad Pitt is at the show in Paris.

7/23 Surprise! The Chilis announce they will be releasing a second double album in October: Return of the Dream Canteen. In a statement the band said, "our moody love for each other and the magic of music had gifted us with more songs than we knew what to do with. Well we figured it out. 2 double albums released back to back. The second of which is easily as meaningful as the first or should that be reversed. ‘Return of the Dream Canteen’ is everything we are and ever dreamed of being. It’s packed. Made with the blood of our hearts.”

7/29 Randy's Donuts' giant donut next to the 405 freeway in LA is given the RHCP treatment, and inside the shop they begin offering a limited edition specially crafted "Red Hot Donut." This is to celebrate the show the hometown boys will perform at the nearby Sofi Stadium in Inglewood.

8/14 Chad Smith brings out his 95-year-old mom to the stage at the sold-out show in their hometown of Detroit.

Hang it in the Louvre

8/18 The band releases the video for "Tippa My Tongue," the first single from Return of the Dream Canteen.

8/28 The Red Hots receive MTV's 2022 Global Icon Award. Part of Flea's acceptance speech included him saying, "To everyone of you other there watching on TV and here: I love you,” he gushed. “I love cockroaches and dirt and trees and every human being and the ocean and the fish in it and deer and deer antlers and birds and sky and love. And everything that isn’t love is cowardice!"

9/2 A Twitter rumor spreads that the RHCP are going to have an after party at a place called Pinky's in Charlotte, NC. Hundreds show up. But the band does not.

9/3 During the Taylor Hawkins tribute in England, Chad Smith shares a sweet tale about his close friend.

Chad has often called Taylor his best friend.

9/14 The band plays the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem, NYC to hype their new SiriusXM station, Whole Lotta Red Hot (Ch. 315).

9/23 The video for "Eddie" is released, a tribute to dearly departed Eddie Van Halen, which will appear on Return of the Dream Canteen. “Sometimes we don’t realize how deeply affected and connected we are to artists until the day they die. Eddie Van Halen was a one-of-a-kind," Anthony Kiedis wrote. "The day after his death Flea came into rehearsal with an emotional bassline. John, Chad and I started playing along and pretty soon with all our hearts, a song in his honor effortlessly unfolded.”

Yes the guitar solo shreds.

10/12 The band plays for free at Hoopa High School in Humboldt, CA, after they tell their tour manager they'd really like to perform in a Native American community.

10/25 Return of the Dream Canteen goes #1. 2022 becomes the year the Peppers had two #1 albums on the charts. They are the first act in 17 years to accomplish the feat - System of a Down pulled it off in 2005. The Chilis now join the small club along with SOAD, Led Zeppelin, DMX, Jay-Z, Garth Brooks and 2Pac.

10/29 The RHCP cover Nirvana and the Ramones during the annual benefit for The Silverlake Conservatory, a music school Flea co-founded in 2001. They rocked out a total of 11 tunes to the delight of parents, kids, and supporters of the school.

11/1 Anthony turns 60. Seriously. On his IG, Flea posted a photo of both of them making funny faces and wrote, "45 years since we met, my life changed forever, my brother, I love you with all my heart, happy birthday!!!

11/15 "Black Summer" receives a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Song. Meanwhile Chad Smith also has a chance to win in that category since he played on Ozzy Osbourne's "Patient Number 9" which is also nominated.

RHCP already have tour dates scheduled for 2023 - see those here.
