10 Artists Covering 2024's 'Breakout Star' Chappell Roan

Even though she's been around for years, 2024 was the breakout year for Chappell Roan where hoards of fans packed festival grounds to watch her perform, and where groups and singers covered her hits and deep tracks.

This year was big for many others, but somehow Chappell gained the attention of both the music makers and music lovers.

You could say it was a phenomenon of sorts.

Here's who covered her best.

Orville Peck, "Pink Pony Club"

The masked cowboy singer we all love covered "Pink Pony Club" four times this year, three times in October alone. The last time he sang it was at the Hollywood Palladium which is just a 15-20 minute drive east of The Abbey, the gay club that inspired the song about dancing on the stage in our heels.

Franz Ferdinand, "Good Luck, Babe"

Just last week Franz covered "Good Luck, Babe" while on the BBC 2 show Sofa Session. The Scottish group named after the Austrian Arch Duke did the song as their last of four tunes for the host, Jo.

"It's just an amazing song by an incredible artist," singer Alex Kapranos said that day. "It’s funny, you get some artists that have a moment, often it’s kind of divisive. Some people absolutely love them and some people hate them. But I’ve not come across anybody I know, none of my friends, nobody I know, who doesn’t like this artist. They’re just so good. This song’s incredible!"

The band has four more shows left on their schedule this year including one at the Forum. Get tix on their website.

Melissa Etheridge, "Red Wine Supernova"

Melissa Etheridge has been incorporating her hit "I Want to Come Over" with "Red Wine Supernova." The Advocate gushed that the "mash-up is the lesbian anthem we didn't know we needed."

Etheridge's Spring Tour gets a jumpstart next month with six dates in Florida. Get your tickets on her website.

Kacey Musgraves, "Pink Pony Club"

At its heart "Pink Pony Club" is a rebellious tune about a daughter coming of age and declaring her independence to her mother who tells her she's a big girl now and no longer the small-town child who moved to LA. Musgraves is just the type of strong-willed personality who only had to put her foot down a few times until everyone around her got it that it was her way or the highway.

She has covered the tune 17 times on her Deeper Well World Tour. There are just three more dates of the tour this year before she takes a break till March. Get your tix on her website.

Laufey, "Casual"

While at the Willamsburg Arts Festival this summer, the genre-bending star Laufey told the audience how cool it was that there were so many women putting out great new music.

"It's truly such an amazing time to be alive," she said. "I kind of want to cover one of the songs I've been hearing. I loved it for a really long time. I loved it before it went viral... this is a different side of myself."

And then she said, "any of you guys know Chappell Roan?" To which the audience went wild.

Laufey's concert at the Hollywood Bowl this summer was recorded in IMAX and hits theaters Friday. Get tickets here.

JXDN, "Hot To Go"

Jaden Hossler, the singer / rapper / TikToker who is signed to Travis Barker's DTA Records covered "Hot To Go" this summer atop a Hollywood rooftop for MTV.

One of the tough parts of doing a cover is making it your own and, gotta say, using the vocoder for the chorus was genius. It sounds a little futuristic and adds the right amount of flair.

Sabrina Carpenter, "Good Luck, Babe"

Another "breakout" female singer who has been around for years who is finally getting her moment is Sabrina Carpenter. When the petite songstress with the impossibly high hemline was at the BBC this summer she performed three songs, the third being "Good Luck, Babe" - is this the formula Franz followed this fall? After hearing it we can see why. Sadly it was the only time Sabrina has covered it, which is too bad because she nailed it.

Vampire Weekend, "Hot To Go"

While on their Only God Was Above Us Tour, Vampire Weekend has an encore that contains about 20 minutes of fulfilling requests from the fans. Like The Replacements in the 1980s, most of the covers are just snippets and somewhat half-assed, although a few truly rock it out.

Vampire Weekend has covered Chappell three times this year in the Request Zone segment of the set. Their tour is still going on so make sure to yell out "Freebird" or a deeper Chappell cut if you successfully get tickets to their remaining shows.

Kelly Clarkson "My Kink Is Karma"

Embedded content is no longer available.

Kelly Clarkson has covered over 400 artists during her career and during her TV show's "Kellyoke" segment. This year she's covered four Chappell Roan songs and perhaps the best one was "My Kink Is Karma," a song that only two other people have dared take on, according to our records. Kelly really had fun singing the tune adding her own flourishes, but in doing so we also gain a higher appreciation to the original.

Weird Al & Will Forte, "Hot To Go"

Last month SNL alumni Will Forte and "Weird Al" Yankovic performed at ThunderGong which is a charity to help uninsured and underinsured amputees get prosthetic limbs. Forte educated Al that one could sing other people's songs without changing the words - something the great satirist had not done too much of in his glorious and hilarious past. They took on Hot To Go and not only got the words right but aced the dance moves.
