Death Cab For Cutie Live Debuted New Songs at Lollapalooza 2005

On July 24th, 2005, indie rock icons Death Cab for Cutie played Lollapalooza for the first time. It was certainly an interesting time for the festival, which had previously been a touring event and was settling down in Chicago for the first time. Fans were hesitant, given that the previous year, Lollapalooza had been canceled entirely due to poor ticket sales. Lollapalooza 2005 was also marred by excessive heat, with temperatures reaching 104 degrees—a rarity for Chicago!

That being said, it was the artists who pulled through and gave great performances that helped Lollapolooza 2005 be an unlikely success! One of these artists was Death Cab For Cutie, who helped close the last night of the festival along with jam band Widespread Panic.

During their set, Death Cab For Cutie debuted two songs—“Soul Meets Body” and “Crooked Teeth”—from their major label debut that was about to drop, Plans. Just over a month later, “I Will Follow You Into The Dark,” the band’s biggest song ever, would drop, and Plans would go on to be certified platinum.

Along with the new songs, Death Cab for Cutie played lots of Transatlanticism tracks such as the title track and “The Sound Of Settling.” They also performed songs from older albums, including “Styrofoam Plates” and “I Was a Kaleidoscope” from 2001’s The Photo Album.
