Has your fiance tried a consumer DNA test. I'd highly recommend doing one on ancestry.com. They are relatively inexpensive and fairly popular. Also, if your fiance's mom had any siblings and one of them would agree to be tested, that would also help. Any relative matches to both him and mom's relative can be eliminated. Any other close matches would be paternal and might give some clues.
