I have had a look at the NME and I can confirm that Stereolab did support Moose on their tour at the end of 1991 according to the official press advert. So yes, you did see them at UMIST. I can see no evidence of Verve as the second support though, but they were such a tiny band in 1991 that I am not surprised that they didn't get a mention. I would say that they fit the bill perfectly so I believe you are correct. Funnily enough in the gig list for the NME for this show it gives Bob and Intastella as the two support groups which I am sure is incorrect.
Sadly I couldn't glean any more info about Stereolab being support for the Cocteaus in Warrington. It just says "Cocteau Twins" in their gig listings. Oh well, maybe one day someone can show a bit more evidence. Hope this is of use.

I have had a look at my old Melody Makers and in the issue dated 28th May 1994 an official advert for the gig states that Stereolab were the support for the Cocteau Twins at the Royal Festival Hall in London but not for the other dates. Contrary to this, in the same issue, the MM gig guide shows that the Cocteaus were supported by Stereolab in Warrington. I can find no reference to Moose though. I will have a search through my old NMEs and will see what they say. Watch this space....
