Silk Sonic Kick Off Las Vegas Residency with Four Live Debuts

In an era where “pics or it didn’t happen” reigns supreme, Silk Sonic’s Las Vegas Residency kickoff truly transported fans back to a time where the only souvenir from seeing a live show was their memory. The magic-making duo (Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak) opened the 18-song setlist with the especially apropos Vegas jam "777" (I'm 'bout to buy Las Vegas after this roll Come on, seven, seven, seven, let's go). The live debut of "Skate" came early in the show, but we can't show it to you, because no phones were allowed. It's even noted on the setlist that they improvised a little ditty, "We Took Your Phones Away."

What's interesting about this commitment to living in the moment - aside from the "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" element - is that Mars and .Paak never intended to play any of these songs live. They told Rolling Stone, "It felt like the world was gonna end — like, man, I don’t know if we’re ever gonna play. Let’s put together an imaginary show — this set list of doom.’” [...] They played live instruments and took turns singing, aiming for “crazy notes,” as Mars puts it, without concern for whether they’d be able to hit them onstage night after night. “We were like, ‘We’re never gonna play this live, so don’t worry about it!’” .Paak says.

But they did it. They brought the whole soulful album to life and then some. In addition to "Skate", the supergroup live debuted "Put on a Smile" "After Last Night" and the main set closer "Blast Off."

The pair slotted in a selection of solo material as well, including Bruno's 2016 chart-topper "That's What I Like" and Anderson's most-performed song to date, "Come Down."

Silk Sonic encored with their introductory hit, "Leave The Door Open."
