Concert of the Day: Jimmy Buffett Plays 3 Shows in Sydney 2011

Musician Jimmy Buffett is taking his escapist music style to another level during this quarantine period. The singer has been rebroadcasting past shows as part of his Cabin Fever: Your Virtual License to Chill 2020 spring tour. The series launched on March 25 with a throwback to 2015 show in Key West, Florida. Yesterday (April 15), the seventh installment highlighted a show from 2011 in Sydney, Australia. Fans can watch the broadcast here. The full schedule for the shows that will be aired includes many past iconic shows with fan favorites. Fans can rediscover these shows with the band every Wednesday and Saturdays, with an encore at the respective times on the schedule.

In honor of these rebroadcasts, we’re looking back to the three gigs Buffett performed in January 2011 in Sydney, Australia. All of the setlists included the same tracks, with a few change-ups here and there. What differed most were the encores. The setlists themselves were pretty hefty, with approximately 27-29 songs played per set.

January 23, 2011 — Sydney Opera House
Jimmy opened up with a solo acoustic version of “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes,” followed by quite the number of covers, which dominated the setlist. He performed covers of Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl,” Crowded House’s “Weather With You” and The Beatles’ “When I’m Sixty-Four,” among many others.

He dished out many hits from popular records like Last Mango in Paris and Volcano in his discography. Tracks such as “Gypsies in the Palace,” “Jolly Man Sing,” “Boat Drinks” and “Fins” colored the setlist. Jimmy closed out the main set with the iconic “Margaritaville,” before jumping into two sets of encore performances. The first set included “Fins” and Billy Newman’s “Louisiana 1927” and the second one wrapped up the show with a solo acoustic version of “Growing Older but Not Up.”

Covers didn’t eat up most of the setlist, but Jimmy dabbled in some classics for fans, including Josh Kear’s “Bama Breeze” and Alan Jackson’s “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere,” which was performed with country music singer Mac McAnally. Most of the songs from the previous evening’s set made it onto the setlist, including some of his most played songs, “One Particular Harbour,” “Son of a Son of a Son of a Sailor” and “A Pirate Looks at Forty,” which has been performed live 1,110 times.

A couple of deep cuts snuck in there, too, including “Take Another Road” and “The Pascagoula.” He ended the show with another two sets of encores. The first one kicked off with “Scarlet Begonias” by Grateful Dead and ended with “Fins.” The last encore nicely wrapped up the evening with a solo acoustic version of “Tin Cup Chalice.”

This show was particularly notable for many reasons. Jimmy performed a classic cover of Mac McAnally’s “It’s My Job,” played alongside MacAnally himself. He also sang “Creola” with featured female vocalist Nadirah Shookar, who toured with Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band.

Jimmy performed “Boomerang Love,” pulled from the record Off to See the Lizard, which was last played in Mansfield, Massachusetts on August 28, 2003, before this show. The first encore set included the same tracks from January 24. He closed out the show with an acoustic performance of “Lovely Cruise.” After the completion of his final song, Jimmy fell off the stage. He was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital and was treated for a large cut on his head. He was later released fully recovered.
