Who Is Declan McKenna?

Declan Mckenna is the 18-year-old U.K. singer-songwriter that is winning everyone over with his heavy use of eyeliner, loud political statements, and of course his amazing vocals. Mckenna has been growing with recognition ever since winning the Glastonbury Festival's Emerging Talent Competition in 2015 and the release of his debut single "Brazil."

Declan Mckenna "Brazil"

"Brazil" was a direct protest against FIFA and the 2014 FIFA World Cup being held in Brazil. Following that track, Mckenna continued to release various singles leading up to his 2017 debut album What Do You Think About the Car. He describes his debut album:

“There were a lot of changes, and I think you can hear that within some of the songs on the record. Quite a big part of the album is about change and being confused… a lot of the headspace I was in was trying to make sense of growing up in a world with loads of crazy things happening.”

Declan Mckenna designed his music and entire career to speak up about the challenges of trans youth, right-wing media, religious fanaticism, and being a young person in an often dark world. Mckenna does just that in his song "Why Do You Feel So Down," the ninth track off What Do You Think About the Car, watch the music video below:

Mckenna recently went on a 2018 USA tour that wrapped in March. The tour was in support of his debut album and took him across the various cities including San Diego, Seattle, Salt Lake City, Indianapolis, and Nashville. Mckenna also made appearances at 2017 and 2018 Coachella, bringing in crowds much bigger than expected. Watch fan-footage of him crowd surfing during his 2018 Coachella set below:
