Firefly 2018 Festival Interview + Portraits: Lights

Canadian electro-pop singer Lights brought her bright red locks and gold-certified albums to the stage at Firefly festival this past weekend at Dover International Speedway in Dover, Delaware. The lush woodland landscape of the Backyard Stage on day 1 (Friday June 15) was the perfect platform for Lights AKA Valerie Anne Poxleitner, to showcase all the best cuts from her fourth studio album, 2017’s Skin & Earth. She also busted out an incredible acoustic over of Cher’s “Believe” halfway through her set, highlighting the best of her vocal abilities.
"Believe" (Cher Cover) - LIGHTS
Before the pop singer/ songwriter dazzled the festival with her 11-song set, Lights did a quick Q&A with us about playing festivals. Check it out.
Setlist: How do you approach putting together a setlist for a festival?
Valerie: Mostly bangers, with a few real sing-a-long tracks and one heartfelt tune. The idea is to show people who otherwise might not know who you are, who you are, and give the existing fans a good time.
What’s your best festival song? (The instant crowd pleaser, one that catches on quickly)
Valerie: “Up We Go” and “Giants” are pretty easy to catch on to even if you don’t know them.
What’s your measure of success for a festival set?
Valerie: If people don’t leave half way through!
Who are you most excited to share the bill with?
Arctic Monkeys and my boys in Flor!
What’s been your most memorable festival experience so far?
Watching and singing loud to Human League, slightly buzzed, arm in arm with people I love.
