Setlist History: Whitney Houston Kicks Off The Greatest Love World Tour

On July 26th, 1986, the late and great Whitney Houston kicked off the beginning of The Greatest Love World Tour, which went to North America, Europe, Japan and Oceania for a total of 50 dates (four months.)

32 years ago today, she took the stage at Columbia, Maryland's Merriweather Post Pavillion and captured everyone's hearts with a voice that before, people only thought could be heard from the gates of heaven. In 1986 at just 22-years-old, Whitney was thriving. The tour was in support of her successful multi-platinum debut album Whitney.

The R&B star started the night with a magnetic performance of Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" before going into the 15 song setlist. This show was particularly iconic because she played a lot of hits for the very first time, including "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)" and "Didn't We Almost Have It All." She also included her earliest hit singles "You Give Good Love" and "How Will I Know," along with covers that the queen was able fully rework, simply with that voice of hers.

Some iconic covers from the show included "I Am Changing" by Jennifer Holiday, "Heart to Heart" by Kenny Loggins, "Greatest Love of All" by George Benson, and a cover of her mother's own "He/ I believe" (Cissy Houston.)

Whitney's setlist remained similar from night-to-night, but her voice and dance moves took a life of their own each time. Since 1986, she went on to become one of the greatest Pop and R&B stars of our time, particularly after her role in 1992's Bodyguard, which is probably one of the best soundtracks of all time with her famously-made covers like "I Will Always Love You" by Dolly Parton and "I'm Every Woman" by Chaka Khan.

The world lost the greatest voice and icon of its generation on February 11, 2012 when she returned back to heaven. Her legacy remains unmatched to this day.

RIP Whitney Houston, we miss you!
